Take Care Out There: Wind Advisory Extended Through Saturday Morning

Blowing dust may make travel difficult in parts of Riverside County, the National Weather Service said.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA - Gusty winds in parts of Riverside County, including the Coachella Valley, will blow throughout the day today and overnight as a storm system moves through the region.

A National Weather Service wind advisory issued Thursday evening for the Coachella Valley, the San Gorgonio Pass near Banning and the Riverside County mountains is set to remain in effect until 3 a.m. Saturday. West to southwest
winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour will be possible throughout the advisory period, along with gusts that could reach 60 miles per hour in some areas, though only around half that strength in the Coachella Valley.

In the valleys around Riverside, light winds and a slight chance of morning rain is in the forecast through Sunday.

"A trough of low pressure will remain over the western states through much of next week maintaining stronger onshore flow across Southern California with cooler high temperatures, a deep marine layer with persistent coastal low clouds and periods of gusty west winds for the mountains and deserts,'' according to the weather service.

Forecasters warned that blowing dust may reduce visibility to less than three miles in some desert areas, and strong winds may make for locally hazardous travel.

"Stay alert for strong cross winds and areas of blowing dust and sand if you have travel plans in the deserts,'' according to the weather service.

The wind is expected to die down below advisory level Saturday, but breezy conditions will persist throughout the weekend. Forecasters predicted winds of about 15 to 20 mph in the Coachella Valley and the mountains, and to
20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph along the San Gorgonio Pass as the weekend gets underway.
