LIVERMORE, CA — Christopher Filice, Livermore High School choir teacher, ranked among Alameda County's best this year.

Filice was nominated and will be honored Nov. 4 at the Castro Valley Center for the Arts at the Alameda County Office of Education's 32nd annual Teacher of the Year awards ceremony for helping students with skills such as vocal development, musicianship and ensemble, the county said in a news release. A winner will be chosen at the ceremony.

Filice has been a teacher for seven years and "believes that music can help people understand the cultures around them in a deep and meaningful way," the county wrote.

When he's not in the classroom, you might find him singing with San Francisco's International Orange Chorale or Philadelphia's The Same Stream choir.

"With all the challenges our students and school staff have faced over the last 18 months, the light shines even brighter on the educators who, day in and day out, found a way to keep students engaged and learning under exceedingly difficult circumstances," L. K. Monroe, county superintendent of schools, said in a statement.

Filice was one of 17 honorees nominated "for their individual dedication and excellence in the classroom," the county education office said in its statement. A panel of leaders in education selected the honorees, whose names will advance to the California Department of Education for consideration for its California Teacher of the Year program.

Honorees "collectively represent the thousands of educators doing amazing work across Alameda County every day," the office said.

Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated that Filice received the award, when he had in fact been nominated.
