Unless you are purchasing a new home or their is some other lender required provision its too late. to purchase an NFIP Flood Insurance Policy for the big storm: "The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has a 30-day waiting period in effect to prevent homeowners from purchasing a policy at the last minute when a flood is imminent." Source.

Too Bad, as some studies have adequately shown that NFIP flood maps are dated and old and not as accurate as they once were. Just because the NFIP does not think you live in a high risk zone, does not mean that there is no risk of local flooding your neck of the San Francisco Bay area.

It is said that Floods do more damage than all the other perils combined and, globally, they happen every year. We know it will rain, we know the tides will rise, and sometimes there is just more water than other times of year.

Standard home insurance policies exclude water damage from Floods. Your home insurance policy will not protect you from a flood.

Luckily for Americans the NFIP provides flood insurance as well as numerous other Private Flood Insurers. However most of these choice have a delay before the flood policy will go into force.
