At around 10 p.m. Tuesday an SRPD officer responding to an unrelated medical emergency was traveling through the Third Street and Lincoln Avenue intersection when he observed a speeding driver that nearly collided with his car, police said.

The officer continued his response to the emergency until he was called off and was able to return to the intersection in pursuit of the reckless driver, police said.

The officer located the vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop but the driver fled, leading a pursuit west on Fifth Avenue into the West End Neighborhood, police said.

The pursuit ended when Lopez-Lopez turned onto a dead-end at Ray Court, and additional officers arrived to assist, police said.

Bilingual officers attempted to communicate with Lopez-Lopez in Spanish and English, but he refused to comply, police said.

Officers saw Lopez-Lopez making erratic movements in the vehicle, police said.

“For over 20 minutes, officers continued to use de-escalation techniques and communication with Lopez-Lopez,” police said in a statement.

“Finally, Lopez-Lopez began to cooperate, and officers were able to take him into custody without incident.”
