MILL VALLEY, CA — A teacher on leave from the Mill Valley Unified School District was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of multiple sex abuse crimes against an underage victim, according to the Marin County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators have identified the suspect as Darren Smith, of Fairfax, who has been employed as a teacher at the district since August 2013. Officials said the investigation began with a mandated cross-report filed on March 28 after the district became aware of the allegations and placed Smith on administrative leave.

Detectives said a weekslong investigation into the allegations, including forensic interviews and evaluating evidence, developed probable cause to move forward with Smith's arrest Tuesday. He was booked into jail on suspicion of lewd and lascivious acts with a child and continuous sexual abuse of a child. Smith is being held on $200,000 bail.
