New Edition of 'Mount Tamalpais Trails' Reveals More Mt. Tam Secrets

Author Barry Spitz's sixth edition offers 160 trails and fire roads, maps, color photos and Mt. Tam history.

Marin County — No one knows Marin's Mt. Tam like Barry Spitz does.

Spitz, who has spent more than 40 years uncovering Tam's secrets, shares more of his encyclopedic knowledge in the newly released 2016 edition of "Mount Tamalpais Trails," published by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.

Spitz's "Mount Tamalpais Trails," first published in 1990, is described as a much-loved classic on the history, pathways and lore of the beloved mountain.

"The mountain is eternal, but trails change, and in his new book ... Barry Spitz updates and expands the roster," wrote Mike Hsu of the Parks Conservancy in the July Park E-ventures newsletter.

The edition is a special collaboration between the partners of One Tam (Marin Municipal Water District, Marin County Parks, California State Parks, National Park Service and Parks Conservancy) and the author —in support of restoration, stewardship and education initiatives on the mountain.
