Terra Marin Outdoor Micro-Schools Launch This Week!

Get your children back into school safely! Make nature the classroom!

Research says that the safest place for us to be right now in the time of COVID-19 is outdoors. Therefore the educators at Terra Marin School used one of the things they know best - outdoor education - to develop an innovative way to get children back to in-person learning safely! Terra Marin Micro-School - located in San Francisco and Marin County - was built on the foundation of Earth Education which was already a foothold of the Terra Schools educational philosophy pre-COVID. With one full day outdoors each week, students at Terra Marin K-8 spend purposeful time outside in some of the most beautiful locations in the Bay area learning in and about nature, bonding with their classmates, practicing teamwork, critical thinking, leadership and more.

Building on this concept, the micro-schools layer on the key curricular subjects of math, English, science and even music, making the outdoors the actual classroom. Walls, desks and worksheets are replaced by ocean and beach exploration at Rodeo Beach learning about the tides in real time, poetry lessons in the forests of Muir Woods and math lessons using the natural environment as manipulatives to learn fractions.

This unique and forward thinking program which is completely outdoors five days a week, meets and exceeds the common core curriculum standards, is led by highly seasoned educators, allows children to socialize safely and brings students into a space where learning is hands-on, project based, enriching and engaging.
