Tupac Shakur's Mom Afeni Shakur Davis Dies in Marin County

The sheriff's office is reporting the mother of the famous rap artist died late last night.

MARIN COUNTY, CA- Afeni Shakur Davis, the mother of legendary rap artist Tupac Shakur while also a local legend in her own right, has died at the age of 69 in Marin County, sheriff's officials announced this morning.

According to the Marin County Sheriff's Office, Davis died late last night.

Deputies were called to Davis' Sausalito home around 9:30 p.m. Monday, after getting a call of a possible cardiac arrest. She was taken to an area hospital, where she died about an hour later, the sheriff's office reported.

An investigation is underway into the exact manner and cause of her death, according to the agency.

An upcoming biopic on the life and death of Tupac Shakur, 'All Eyez on Me,' is in the works, and will reportedly highlight Davis and her relationship with her son. She was also an executive producer on the project, according to SFGate.com.

"His parents were Black Panthers," the film's director, Benny Boom, told Billboard in February. "You see the struggles of his youth, his relationship with his mother, father figures that were in and out of his life, and what he developed into as a man from that. It humanizes him."

Though her son may be the reason many first recognize Davis, she was also a well-known political activist with strong business smarts who helped preserve her son's estate upon his death. Read more at SFGate.com here.
