MONROVIA, CA — Street racing is blamed Saturday for a violent crash on a Monrovia street.

The crash was reported at 1:08 p.m. in the 1900 block of South Myrtle Avenue, according to Monrovia police Lt. Daniel Verna.

"Both vehicles were estimated to be traveling well in excess of the posted and safe speed limit of 40 mph," Verna said. "One of the racing motorists swerved into the opposing lane of travel and collided into another motorist traveling north."

The impact split the racing vehicle in half, with the front left in the roadway, he said. "The rear half struck an Edison pole catching the vehicle and the wooden pole on fire. Electrical wires from the pole broke off and were hanging," Verna said.

The driver of the racing vehicle was ejected from the wreckage and found in the street with what Verna described as "major life-threatening injuries."

The driver of the other vehicle had major non-life-threatening injuries, he said. Both motorists were taken to hospitals by Monrovia Fire Department paramedics.

"The other racing vehicle did not stop, and could not be located," Verna said. The investigation was ongoing.
