Aftermath of December Storm Event

The National Weather Service reported that the rain event accumulated over 5 inches of precipitation. Thankfully, there were no reported damage in the Ridgeside or Oakglade Drive neighborhood. However, there is significant damage to Monrovia Canyon Park, including sections of roadway that are gone and culverts that are filled in, the stream has cut new paths throughout the park, and in some areas 6 - 12 feet of earth has been eroded away. Additionally, there are rocks of all sizes, some as large as minivans, scattered throughout the park.

The initial damage is estimated to be about $10,000,000. At this time, staff is preparing plans to: clear out debris; remove silt, sediment and rock from the park, and; begin to repair the damaged infrastructure. Monrovia Canyon Park will remain closed indefinitely for a period of time. During the duration of the closure, photos, aerial footage, and much more information will be shared with the community.

Preparation for Rain Event

Forecasts are calling for a rain event throughout the Los Angeles County area beginning on Thursday and continuing through to Saturday. Based upon the weather forecast related to rain accumulation, LA County Flood Control does not anticipate any debris or mudflows in the recent Bobcat Fire burn areas. Monrovia Public Works, along with Monrovia Fire & Rescue and Police Department will remain on-call to monitor the situation and respond as necessary.

Holiday Safety Tips from Neighborhood & Business Services

Christmas Trees & Holiday Lighting! In the final holiday installment, we would like to share a few helpful reminders:

  • Christmas Tree Recycling is from 12/27-1/4 on your trash day. Just leave the tree out next to your bins and don’t put a bag on it or leave the tree stand attached.
  • Please do not illegally dump bulky items. Be sure to schedule ahead with Athens prior to putting it out on the curb.
  • Athens is operating on Fridays as normal.
  • Street sweeping will also continue, but there will be NO parking enforcement, 12/23 - 1/2.
  • Do NOT leave any boxes out by the curb that show what shiny new gifts you got - the Grinch is watching!

The Neighborhood & Business Services Division wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Stay safe and enjoy time with loved ones. See you in 2022!
