Concerts Near Monrovia And LA County This Week

Here's a round-up of live music in LA County this week. Plus, a Q&A with indie rock band Vinyl Theatre.

MONROVIA, CA – There are a ton of great shows to catch this week in Los Angeles County, and we've gathered a list of live music from twenty of the county's top music venues for this week's round-up. From blues, to throwbacks, to indie rock, and electronic, there's something for everyone to see.

This week, Patch caught up with Chris Senner, keyboardist in indie rock band Vinyl Theatre. Vinyl Theatre is performing at the Roxy Theatre at 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 21.

Emily Holland: How would you describe your music to someone that’s never heard it?

Chris Senner: We try to make energetic, fun music geared towards live performances. It’s changed over the years, but we still think about the live show when writing new songs.

EH: Lyrically, are you more inspired by interpersonal relationships or the environment you’re in?

CS: I think it changes from song to song. We’ve definitely written about both. Starcruiser is more personal for us and has stories about people who are close to us.

EH: Your music makes me wanna dance, and I hear some post-punk and synth pop influences. Who are your biggest musical inspirations/influences? Any artists that have helped shape your sound?

CS: This is always changing and is different for all of us. The Killers have been a big influence on Keegan and I. A couple big ones for Nick are Alan Parsons Project and Rush.

EH: I read Keegan and Chris met at a cross-country meet in high school – how has your relationship changed since then? Are there any complications with being “real life” friends with your bandmates?

CS: I don’t think so. We’ve been playing music together now for about 10 years and have been touring for four years. Outside of band we don’t have a ton of friends since we spend so much time writing and touring. So the band is pretty close outside of band as well.

EH: How has your sound changed from your first album Electrogram, to Starcruiser, your latest?

CS: It’s definitely gotten a little bit away from the synth pop infused sound of Electrogram. Starcruiser was a lot of fun for us because we just wrote and went with whatever we were digging. We weren’t afraid to take chances with this album and we were hungry to put another album out. I think this record has more down-tempo tracks, but still feels like it has energy at the same time.

EH: What are you listening to right now?

CS: We have been listening to the new TOP, Manchester Orchestra, and AwolNation.
