DUI Checkpoint Coming Up In Monrovia

MONROVIA, CA — The Monrovia Police Department will hold a DUI / Driver’s License checkpoint Friday evening, Aug. 6 at an undisclosed location, with officers checking drivers for signs of being under the influence of alcohol and valid driver’s licenses.

Over the past three years, Monrovia has logged 292 DUI investigations, 27 of those resulting in collision injuries, the department said.

"In California, this deadly crime led to countless deaths because someone failed to designate a sober driver," the agency said. "Alcohol- and drug-impaired deaths still make up the largest category of overall vehicle fatalities, with 29% of all deaths being caused by a drunk driver."

To help curb DUI statistics, police reminded residents to:

• Use a designated driver (a friend who is not drinking, ride-share, cab or public transportation)
• Take the keys and find arrangements for a safe ride home for others who are clearly impaired and trying to drive.
• Report drunk drivers by calling 911.
• Offer non-alcoholic drinks when hosting parties, and monitor who is drinking and how they are getting home.

"Getting home safely is cheap, but getting a DUI is not," Monrovia police said, adding that DUIs can cost drivers roughly $13,500 with fines, fees, classes, license suspension and possible jail time.

The checkpoint funding is from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
