Farmers Club Fountain Poised To Get Landmark Designation

MONROVIA, CA — Monrovia may be getting another historic landmark on Tuesday.

The City Council will discuss whether to designate the Farmers Club Fountain in Library Park as a historic landmark, according to a city staff report.

City officials will meet Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the fountain.

The city's Historic Preservation Commission first discussed the possibility of deeming the fountain historically significant early this year, the report said.

The fountain is located near Myrtle and Lime avenues and has "become a highly recognizable symbol of Old Town Monrovia and Library Park," according to the report. It was built in 1909 by the Monrovia-Duarte Farmers Club, early in the city's history.

The commission then evaluated the fountain's historical significance and found it met two criteria found in the city's Historic Preservation Ordinance, according to the report.

The fountain was found to be a highly recognizable feature of the city and is highly visible in the Old Town area, the report said.

It also "represents an important association with a cultural landscape in Monrovia," officials said. "It has occupied an important location within Old Town Monrovia for over 100 years."

Commissioners eventually recommended the City Council approve the fountain's historical landmark status.
