9.30.21 Community Connections from Supt. Jan La Torre-Derby

Dear NUSD Community,

Congratulations to Lu Sutton School, Principal Mira Patel, “Lu Lu Cheetah,” and of course the tremendous leadership of PTA, Membership Chairperson, and President Erin Compton- Schemmel.   They reached 100% PTA Membership from Lu Sutton families, and as you can see Lu Lu Cheetah, slimed the principal! Fun was had by all! This was a huge undertaking to realize 100% PTA membership and we applaud you!

Modeling the Way-Please Submit Nominations
NUSD’s Modeling the Way Program has begun for the 2021-22 school year. Anyone can nominate an exemplary classified, certificated, or administrative individual and submit it to the Human Resources Department at NUSD.  Submit your nomination  here.  Monthly, the nominations will be reviewed and one from each category will be selected for a visitation and

recognition by Trustees and a district team, along with the site team.

Congratulations to our October recognitions!  In late September, we honored Liz Nelson, teacher at Sinaloa, to the delight of her students who couldn’t wait to share her many exceptional attributes of inclusion, connectedness, and a kind heart! We also honored Karen Dugdale, Office Manager at San Jose Middle School, who was praised by

her nominator for taking care of everyone just like family, always thinking about

others first, and bringing joy to everyone each and every day.  Look for Modeling the Way videos in the coming weeks.

Parent Services Project – Parent Support for Remote Learning 2020-21 Provided in Spanish

Parent Services Project serves schools in San Rafael, Shoreline, and Novato Unified and provides parent education to ensure greater access for parents to engage in the school and supporting their child’s learning at home. They provided parent support for remote learning in Spanish at our four schools which have Marin Community Foundation grants: Hamilton, Loma Verde, Lu Sutton, and Lynwood. Parent Workshops on remote learning were held at all four schools and the parent participation increased significantly during the 2020-21 school year and 142 parents attended the Zoom workshops. The workshops were intended to support parents on how to support their children through remote learning. 39% reported they felt more confident supporting their children with remote learning. The highest participation was from parents of children in 2nd to 5th grade. We appreciate the support of Parent Services Project in supporting remote learning during COVID and providing the sessions in Spanish.
