📰 Here are the top stories in Orange County today:

  1. The Santa Ana city council voted to take action regarding publicly intoxicated and frequently unconscious individuals. “Inebriated people (will be taken) to the city jail, where there’s nursing staff, providing treatment services, and even returning detained people to their cities of origin, in some cases out of state.” Councilmember Phil Bacerra presented the idea. Proponents warned that Santa Ana would look like Los Angeles if it didn’t make changes. Critics pointed toward New York’s criticized “stop and frisk” program. (Voice of OC)
  2. Newport Beach plans to spend $26 million to bury power lines. This step is anticipated to increase property values. It is also intended to “enhance neighborhood aesthetics, safety, and reliability.” (Bloomberg)
  3. The Fullerton Police Department is bringing two social workers on board for a two-year pilot program. They could “help with de-escalating some incidents officers encounter.” Besides that, they might respond to some calls rather than sending police officers, which frees them up to respond more quickly to others. (Fox 11)
  4. A shoutout to the Orange County Sheriff's Department officers who assisted a 12-year-old in Dana Woods. The child fell while riding an e-bike. All was well. However, a Sheriff's Deputy later visited the family and presented the preteen with a new, customized helmet. He also shared with the family that he had seen the boy out riding before and that “he is a great and respectful kid who follows the rules.” (Patch)
  5. The Los Alamitos Youth Center is the newest Orange County Community Support Grant recipient. It intends to use the $25,000 to “expand the Youth Center’s 'Girls in STEM' program.” Participants can look forward to additional workshops and more activities. (PR Web)
