3 S. Bay Teen Musicians Take It 'From The Top' On NPR

Two Palo Alto students and one San Jose teen go on NPR's 'From the Top' on April 14 at 7 p.m. to share music and other interests.

PALO ALTO, CA -- Talent is at play in the Silicon Valley - and not just in computer innovation. Two Palo Alto musicians and a San Jose guitarist will appear on an upcoming episode of "From the Top," the hit NPR radio program featuring America’s best young classical musicians.

The show will air on KDFC April 14 at 7 p.m. and by podcast at fromthetop.org The show was taped at the Hollywood Scoring Studio in Los Angeles on February 24, as part of a "From the Top" residency comprised of creative music making, career development and community engagement designed to enrich both personal and artistic growth for 13 young musicians located across the nation.

Davis You, 17, is a junior at Palo Alto High School. He studies cello with Jonathan Koh, having won the California American String Teacher’s Association competition. The teenager also likes computer programming and eating In-N-Out burgers with friends.

James Poe, 18, hails from Palo Alto and is currently pursuing a certificate in violin performance at Yale University. He has studied with Wei He, Li Lin, and Hyo Kang. Poe also loves photography and making covers of popular music on his YouTube channel “Jupiter Poe."

Eric Wang, 14, is a ninth grader at Valley Christian High School in San Jose. He studies at the California Conservatory of Music with Robert Miller, having won first prize in the Junior Division of the 2018 Guitar Foundation of America International Youth Competition. The teen also loves soccer and astronomy.

"From the Top" is broadcast to nearly a half million listeners on more than 220 stations nationwide as the most popular weekly one-hour music program on public radio. Young performers share their passion for classical music and speak about their non-musical lives. It's suited for youth over 7 years old.

Guest host Peter Dugan appeared on "From the Top" in 2007 at the age of 18. Within the last 11 years, Dugan has appeared as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician across North America and abroad.

The Silicon Valley trio of musicians aren't the first to be featured on the hit music program.
