PALO ALTO, CA — A beloved tree that stood tall in Palo Alto’s Mitchell Park for generations was toppled during a recent storm, Palo Alto Online reports.

The stone pine fell Jan. 4 during a series of storms that battered the Bay Area, according to the report.

The fallen tree was part of a colony of stone pines, and the only one that was knocked down by high winds.

City officials must now decide to do with the fallen tree, according to the report, which notes some are hopeful the tree can be salvaged.

"The treetop was a wonderful place for seeking solitude and communing with nature," Palo Alto resident Janice Savage wrote on NextDoor, according to the report.
