PALO ALTO, CA — Four suspects arrested over the weekend in Palo Alto face felony charges after police allege they ransacked a home and attempted to run from police.

Police said a Palo Alto woman traveling overseas called to report a burglary in progress after she received an alert from her home security system. The woman said live surveillance showed several strangers actively breaking into her home.

Officers rushed to the address on Byron Street and spotted three suspects running from the home and attempting to jump fences to escape. Police said all three were soon arrested without incident, and one was evaluated for injuries after jumping off a second-floor balcony.

A search of the area revealed a black Chevy Tahoe parked near the home with a license plate belonging to a Ford. Inside, police said they found the fourth suspect hiding near the backseat floorboard.

According to police, a preliminary investigation determined the four suspects broke open a glass door on the balcony and ransacked two upstairs bedrooms, stuffing items into two large bags. Officers said they recovered a flashlight and two window punch tools used in the crime.

After the arrests, police said they discovered one suspect was wearing two expensive watches and had a woman's diamond ring in his sock, which officers believe were stolen. Investigators were still working to determine who owned the vehicle, which had not been reported stolen.

According to police, the suspects told officers they were visiting from Chile and did not have local addresses. Two suspects, ages 18 and 23, were booked into jail on suspicion of felony residential burglary and conspiracy, along with misdemeanor resisting arrest. The other two suspects, 17-year-old boys, were booked into juvenile hall.
