Ex-Stanford Tennis Star In Silicon Valley Classic Quarterfinals

The Silicon Valley Classic quarterfinals start at noon Friday featuring Kristie Ahn, with play continuing until Aug. 4 at San Jose State.

SAN JOSE, CA — Former Stanford All-American Kristie Ahn is turning heads as she tears through the tennis competition at the annual Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic set at San Jose State University through Aug. 4.

The 27-year-old Stanford student will meet Donna Vekic of Croatia on Aug. 2. Play will not begin before 4 p.m. on the courts at San Jose State University. The tournament that's part of the U.S. Open Series was once played at Ahn's alma mater.

To reach the quarterfinals Ahn beat Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 and Elise Mertens of Belgium 6-3, 6-3.

Friday’s matchup is likely to be tougher for Ahn. Her opponent is seeded No. 5. Vekic beat Misaki Doi 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the opening round and then took out Victoria Azarenka in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

The winner of this quarterfinal will see either Carla Suarez Navarro or Aryna Sabalenka. This match starts at noon Friday.
