PALO ALTO, CA — The pressure on hospital systems continues to grow as the rate of COVID-19 infections increases across most of the country.

Nationally, COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their highest recorded level, with around 158,800 inpatient beds in use as of Jan. 19, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. About 79 percent of inpatient beds were in use, and 22 percent of all inpatient beds were occupied by a COVID-19 patient. More than 8 out of 10 intensive care unit beds were occupied, and about a third were occupied by COVID-19 patients.

State health officials in California reported to the federal government Jan. 18 that approximately 80 percent of inpatient beds and 82 percent of intensive care unit beds in hospitals across the state were occupied. Around 24 percent of inpatient beds and 31 percent of ICU beds statewide were filled by COVID-19 patients, they reported.

There are some signs that the omicron infection wave is receding in regions that were hit early. New York City peaked at around 40,500 average daily cases Jan. 9, and case counts continue to move downward, according to The New York Times coronavirus tracker.

However, most regions of the country haven’t peaked yet and hospitals remain under great strain. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy warned Sunday that the country is in for a few rough weeks.

Some areas of the country have reached a critical shortage of ICU beds. Four major Oklahoma hospital networks announced they had no ICU beds available on Jan. 19.

The latest hospitalization numbers from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Santa Clara County, included below, are from Jan. 7-13 and represent a rolling seven-day average. Note that the figures for occupied hospital beds sometimes exceed 100 percent; this is because more than one patient sometimes occupies a bed over the course of a week.

Below are the latest figures for hospitals in Santa Clara County.
