PALO ALTO, CA — Paying $1,800 a month for rent may seem like an expensive proposition in many parts of the country, but for one couple living in Palo Alto, it is a “ridiculously” good deal.

The British tabloid Metro published a Q&A with Chris and Sarah, a couple in their 30s who moved from the United Kingdom to Palo Alto last September.

They live in a tight studio and work facing each other on opposite ends of a small table. But while they complained about the lack of space, the couple valued being able to live in the middle of Silicon Valley.

“We would balk at paying $1,800 per month for a similar property anywhere else, but as we are living in one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in the world, our mindset has been warped and prices that we would have previously regarded as outrageous, we now judge to be acceptable,” the couple told Metro.

According to RentCafe, the average rent in Palo Alto is $2,940 — and that’s actually an 11 percent decrease from last year. Ninety percent of residents pay more than $2,000 in rent. The Bay Area is home to three of the top five most expensive rental markets in the country: San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland.
