Palo Alto Man Killed On Highway 84 Near Dumbarton Bridge

The victim's motorcycle was embedded in the engine of the BMW 550i that hit it, according to the CHP log.

NEWARK, CA — A Palo Alto man was killed and a second person was injured early Sunday when a BMW 550i slammed into the back of a motorcycle on Highway 84 in Newark, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP log notes that the motorcycle was "embedded" in the engine of the car that hit it.

CHP Officer Dustin Kennerly told the Bay Area News Group that the driver of the car was taken into custody on suspicion of impaired driving.

The man who was killed has been identified as 40-year-old Michael D. Thomas of Palo Alto. The condition and identity of the second person, who was taken to a hospital, is not available.

The crash forced the closure of two eastbound lanes for several hours. The CHP received the first call about the crash at 2:20 a.m. All lanes were reported clear at about 5:45 a.m.
