PALO ALTO, CA — Reports of a man seen with a handgun on a bike path behind Palo Alto High School prompted a lockdown and sweep of the area Thursday, according to police.

Investigators confirmed the initial report shortly before noon Thursday and said school staff asked the campus to "shelter in place." In updates shared on social media, police said one report indicated a man pointing a handgun at cars driving down Alma Street.

Police remained in the area and said officers did not locate a suspect or any additional witnesses since the early report. The school lifted the shelter-in-place order around 12:15 p.m. after the campus was cleared by police, and some officers remained in the area out of an abundance of caution.
