Tesla Recalls 1.8 Million Vehicles Due To Safety Concern

The vehicles' hoods could open on the road, blocking drivers' views, according to authorities.

PALO ALTO, CA — Tesla is recalling more than 1.8 million vehicles over concerns that their hoods could open on the road, blocking drivers’ views, according to authorities.

The recall will potentially affect just under 1.85 million Model 3, Model S and Model X vehicles from 2021-24 as well as Model Y vehicles from 2020-24, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“The hood latch assembly may fail to detect an unlatched hood condition after the hood has been opened,” Alex Ansley, chief of the Recall Management Division of the administration’s Office of Defects Investigation, said in a letter to Tesla.

“An unlatched hood can fully open, obstructing the driver's view and increasing the risk of a crash.”

The company has released a free software update and owner notification letters are set to be mailed Sept. 22, according to the administration.
