Beacon House Association of San Pedro raised just over $112,000 with the debut of their socially distant event, 20CHEFS.

The occasion with the help of Food Network’s Andrew Zimmern and Southern California Co-chairs Chef Michael Shafer (The Depot) and Chef Christine Brown (Pacific Standard Prime), along with Chef Victor Juarez (Fuego at Hotel Maya), and others helped to raise funds for the 110-man residential recovery and workforce training programs which include two thrift shops and a catering business.

Additional chefs include Paul Buchanan/ Primal Alchemy (Caterer); Jennie Trinh and TJ Holgado of Hungry Bear Catering; Betty Fraser/ As You Like it Catering, formerly of Grub, Hollywood; Andrew Monterossa of Summit Catering; as well as restaurateur Thomas Compagnon and others.

Due to the current pandemic, Beacon House Association of San Pedro had a $225,000.00 shortfall to assist those with alcohol and drug addiction issues. Sponsors purchased a full socially distanced event with a chef cooking at the buyer’s residence or at the chef’s restaurant. Only 10 guests including the host/s participated in the gatherings.

“We could not have been more grateful for the support,” says the sober facility’s Executive Director Brian Smith. “The chefs created delicious meals while our men assisted both in front of and back of house. The experience brought amazing attention to these guys who are starting new ways of living in their communities – without drugs and alcohol.”

Founded in 1970 by Father Art Bartlett, a South Bay minister and Michael Dowling, an alcoholic merchant seaman, the Beacon House Association of San Pedro started with a single two-story building with 18 residents. Incorporated into a non-profit in 1974, the organization has grown over the past 50 years to encompass a full city block in San Pedro, California, including six residential facilities with the capacity to house 110 residents, as well as a kitchen/dining facility, and a training, education and meeting facility. The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a state-certified, residential substance abuse recovery program for men with a sincere desire to achieve long-lasting abstinence from drugs and alcohol. As residents, the men are provided with food, shelter, counseling, peer group support, educational opportunities and job training through social enterprise programs. This allows the men to develop the life and job skills they need to build a foundation in recovery and a bright future when they return to their family, home and community. Recently named one of the best addiction treatment centers in the United States by Newsweek Magazine, men from 39 states across the country have received treatment at Beacon House.
