Chester Bennington Had Alcohol, Ecstasy Before Suicide: Autopsy

The Linkin Park singer had a history of depression and previous suicide attempts, according to his wife.

PALOS VERDES, CA – Chester Bennington's autopsy and toxicology results released Tuesday show that the late Linkin Park singer had small amounts of alcohol and MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, in his system when he committed suicide in July, TMZ reported.

Authorities found a prescription bottle of Zolpidem (generic Ambien) on his dresser along with a half-full pint glass of Corona, and an empty bottle of Stella Artois. Pieces of fingernail were found underneath his iPhone on a table in his bedroom, according to The Mercury News, which his wife Talinda told cops was a nervous habit of the singer.

Bennington had a history of depression and previous suicide attempts, according to his wife, and was in an outpatient treatment program at the time of his death. A month before he died, the singer reportedly told a friend he'd been sober for 6 months, according to The Mercury News.

The singer had been prescribed anti-depressants in the past, but hadn't taken them for more than a year, his wife said. Although there was no suicide note after his July 20 death, police found an "apparent handwritten biography," TMZ reports.

Members of Linkin Park released a statement in July acknowledging Bennington’s “demons.”

“We’re trying to remind ourselves that the demons who took you away from us were always part of the deal,” the statement said. “After all, it was the way you sang about those demons that made everyone fall in love with you in the first place. You fearlessly put them on display, and in doing so, brought us together and taught us to be more human. You had the biggest heart, and managed to wear it on your sleeve.
