Gun Thrown Out Window During Police Chase In South Bay

SAN PEDRO, CA — An 18-year-old was arrested after a vehicle pursuit in the South Bay, during which police saw a handgun being thrown from the vehicle, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

At about 6:10 p.m. on Friday, LAPD officers saw a vehicle driving recklessly in the area of 12th Street and Mesa Street and attempted to conduct a status check.

"When the officers got behind the vehicle to conduct a status check of the vehicle, it accelerated away in an attempt to flee and committed other moving violations, prompting the officers to activate their lights and siren and initiating a vehicle pursuit," LAPD said in a statement.

During the pursuit, a handgun was thrown from the car's window police said. The chase concluded when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into an apartment complex at the intersection of 10th Street and Palos Verdes Street.

The driver, who was identified as Luis Davalos of LA, was arrested without incident and was not injured. The 17-year-old passenger in the car sustained injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital.

Police later recovered the handgun that was thrown out the window.
