Local Robotics Students Honored by Rolling Hills Estates City Council

Student VEX Robotics Teams 7700E, 92305A, 7700K, 7700R, and 7700V were honored for their accomplishments in California State Championship.

On Tuesday, April 26th, Rolling Hills Estates City Council presented the Certificates of Recognition to the Rolling Robots’ VEX Robotics Teams 7700E, 92305A, 7700K, 7700R, and 7700V in recognition of their hard work and outstanding achievement at the 2022 VEX Robotics California State Championship. The certificates were presented to the teams by Mayor Frank Zerunyan at the Rolling Hills City Council meeting.

The meeting was opened by Morgan Deng from Teams 7700E and Winston Lin from Team 923305A who led the flag salute, an honor bestowed upon the two teams for winning the Tournament Champions of the Southern California VRC Middle School State Championship held in San Diego. Mayor Zerunyan invited the founder of Rolling Robots, Bing Jiang, to speak about the Rolling Robots’ program. Afterwards, he issued the certificates to the teams

Under the guidance and support of Rolling Robots, the after school program which the students attend, these five teams have completed astonishing feats this robotics competition season. The teams competed in the 2022 Southern California State Championships in San Diego. The three middle school teams have had great success, with Teams 7700E and 92305A being the Tournament Champions, Team 7700K obtaining not just one but two awards as Tournament Finalists and Create Award Winner, The high school Team 7700R won the Sportsmanship Award at the VRC High School State Championship. The elementary school Team 7700V won the Design Award at the VEX IQ Elementary School State Championship in Los Angeles.

Team 92305A Tournament Champions

Teams 7700E and 923305A, who won Tournament Champion together, are composed of fifteen students combined. Team 7700E, a team of students from Ridgecrest Intermediate School, Chadwick School, Bert Lynn Middle School, and Parras middle school, is made up of students Austin Chen, Ronojoy Sen, Madeleine Jiang, Nikhil Ramanuja, Renee Gerstner, Morgan Deng, and Aidan Westerland. Team 92305A, a team of students from an online school Astra Nova, is composed of students Timmy Brennan, Troy So, Rainelle Yasa, Winston Lin, Zain Mourad, Leo Lopez, Leopoldo Gastel, and Max Waldman. These two teams worked in perfect unison in order to gain this achievement with their excellent robot performance. Under significant pressure and early setbacks during qualification matches, they did not break and stood up to the challenge that was before them!

Team 7700K Tournament Finalists and Create Award Winners

Team 7700K were the Tournament Finalists and Create Award Winner. The team is made up of students from local schools - Rolling Hills Country Day School and Ridgecrest Intermediate School - Ashley Wills, Thomas Wang, Noah Kim, Chris Campbell, Kyle Chu, and Daniel Hong. The Tournament Finalists Award is given to the 2nd place finals match alliance. Alongside their Tournament Finalist title, the team also won the Create Award for building a unique robot with a creative engineering solution.

Team 7700R Sportsmanship Award Winners

Team 7700R were winners of the Sportsmanship Award for generously helping other teams at the State Championship. It’s a competition, but it’s also a meet for students to learn together, solve problems and help each other. This team is composed of students from local high schools - Rolling Hills Country Day School, Peninsula High School, Torrance South High School, Torrance West High School and Blue Ridge Academy - Benjamin Lee, Jaehoon Kim, Avery Lam, Matthew Kwon, Sean Magers, Saifali Haji, and Joshua Roe.

Team 7700V Design Award Winners

The Design Award winner, Team 7700V, is composed of students from Ridgecrest Intermediate School, Point Vicente Elementary School, Rolling Hill Country Day School, Cornerstone Elementary School, and Montemalaga Elementary School - Alex Cao, Liam Horeczko, Lawrence Hui, Anthony Hui, and Charlie Pan. This team was rewarded for their most effective and efficient robot design process.

All of the Students have worked tirelessly since they saw the reveal of the game in May of 2021 and have come so far since then. Now, they are all gearing up for the VEX Robotics World Championship in May at Dallas, Texas. With the blessing from the Mayor and the City Council, these teams along with other seven teams from Rolling Robots will have their opportunities to bring back world titles to the city of Rolling Hills Estates!
