On a beautiful winter day, Saturday, December 11th, twenty teams of young robotics competitors from Los Angeles and Orange County showed up at Rolling Robots Palos Verdes to participate in a VEX IQ Competition Challenge organized by Rolling Robots. The VEX IQ Robotics Challenge is an activity for elementary and middle school students where they learn how to design, build, and code robots. Students participate in local tournaments with opportunities to qualify for the State Championship. Each year, VEX Robotics announces the new challenge in April. The 2021 and 2022 game is "Pitching In". It provides a basic foundation for students to develop long term interest in STEM. Many of the participants also go on to do VEX Robotics Competitions in middle school and high school, and get into STEM career.

Huge congratulations to all winners from the event:

  • The “Alphabots” team won the Excellence Award.
  • Team “The Vipers” and Team “Flying Cheese” won the TeamWork Award.
  • Team "Rolling Robots Palos Verdes" won the Design Award.
  • Team “Royal Andromeda” won the Robot Skills Champion Award.
  • Team "Rolling Robots Glendale" won the Judges Award.

The entire event was run by the Rolling Robots’ VEX Robotics VRC middle school and high school students. High School students Zoe, Avery, Sean M and Middle School student Nikhil and Noah were the referees. Many students from eight Rolling Robots' teams have volunteered at the event! They have been long-time participants of robotics competitions themselves and now they are giving back to the community!

Overall, the event was a great success. Kids, parents, and community volunteers (including engineers and school teachers along with the students) came together to enjoy and celebrate the students’ hard work, share experiences, learn from each other and have fun! The entire event was filled with energy, excitement, and cheers. It not only gave the participating teams the incentive to learn and improve, but also brought like-minded community members together and inspired more people to get involved in learning STEM.

There will be more events like this over the next couple of months, so if you are interested in volunteering for a future event, please email Rolling Robots at [email protected].
