'Music Is About Freedom': Concerts Around Palos Verdes, LA County

Here's a Q&A with Kandace Springs, a Nashville-born singer who transcends genres. Plus, a list of live music this week around LA County.

PALOS VERDES, CA – There are a ton of great shows to catch this week in Los Angeles County, and we've gathered a list of live music from twenty of the county's top music venues for this week's round-up. From blues, to throwbacks, to indie rock, and electronic, there's something for everyone to see.

Patch caught up with Kandace Springs, a singer from Nashville that transcends genres and refuses to be put into a box. Her new album Indigo combines the sounds of R&B, jazz and pop in a new, refreshing way. Catch her Monday night at the Troubadour in Los Angeles starting at 7 p.m.

Kandace Springs: Soul, emotion, freedom, timeless, honest…

EH: In making music, are you more inspired by interpersonal relationships or the environment you’re in?

KS: The environment I’m in - my mood can be effected by the smallest things that happen in a moment. Those are the things that inspire my writing. Every day life…

EH: Do you have any guilty pleasures (music or otherwise)?

KS: I’m obsessed with cars – muscle cars, vintage cars, you name it. I have five. I detail them, fix them and sell them – and best of all, I love to drive them. Taking my bad ass Jeep off-road is one of my favorite things to do when I come home for touring! I also love Chick-fil-A!

EH: I saw you’ve lived in NY, LA, and Nashville. How do the three cities compare in regards to writing (/generally getting the creative juices flowing) and performing live?

KS: They are all different, it’s so hard to say. In Nashville I tend to write more by myself, so the songs are more personal. In NY and LA I usually co write with my SRP team, Evan and Carl or other writer producers. So in those situations we write about things that are a combination of personal experiences and things that we feel like people can relate to. I enjoy both.

EH: Your album transcends genres. Why is it important, as an artist, not to get boxed into a certain label or genre for your unique sound?

KS: I have always been all over the map with my musical taste. Jazz, classical, soul/R&B. Nina Simone is one of my heroes and she refused to be put in a box. Music is about freedom to me.
