New Chief Of Police Appointed In Palos Verdes Estates

The Palos Verdes Estates Police Department announced the appointment of a new chief of police.

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, CA — The Palos Verdes Estates Police Department has appointed Luke Hellinga as the new Chief of Police.

Hellinga has served as acting chief of police since January of 2023 after the previous Police Chief Tony Best retired. He has been a part of the department since 2001 when he started as an intern.

“I am deeply humbled to have been chosen as the Chief of the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department,” said Luke Hellinga. “I eagerly anticipate the future, filled with progress and momentum. The trust that has been placed in me by the men and women of the police department, the City Manager, the elected officials, and the community members is a responsibility I do not take lightly. I am committed to building upon the department’s longstanding foundation of community service and ensuring public safety at the highest level.”

Throughout Hellinga's tenure with the city, he has held various roles including Patrol Officer, Detective, Supervisor and Captain of both the support and patrol divisions.

Hellinga is a South Bay native with deep roots in the community. He is also a member of the South Bay Regional DUI Task Force and Special Enforcement Team.

“Chief Hellinga has shown unwavering commitment to the department and to the community. Under his leadership, our police force will continue to prioritize safety, comfort and tranquility in our community,” said Mayor Pro Tem Victoria Lozzi. “With a steadfast commitment to professionalism, integrity and discipline, our City continues to uphold the highest law enforcement standards.”
