Ocean Water Use Warning Issued For San Pedro

Several Los Angeles County beaches are under bacteria warning Friday, health officials said.

SAN PEDRO, CA — Bacteria levels are exceeding state standards at multiple Los Angeles County beaches Friday, including San Pedro.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health cautions residents who are planning to visit the below Los Angeles County beaches to avoid of swimming, surfing, and playing in ocean waters:

  • Topanga Canyon Beach in Malibu
  • Leo Carrillo State Beach in Malibu
  • Herondo Storm Drain at Redondo Beach
  • Mother’s Beach in Marina Del Rey
  • Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica
  • Westchester Storm Drain at Dockweiler State Beach
  • Imperial Highway Storm Drain at Dockweiler State Beach
  • Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro

"The warnings have been issued due to bacterial levels exceeding health standards when last tested," health officials said.

Warnings were lifted for the Pico-Kenter storm drain at Santa Monica Beach, health officials said.

Several beaches across the Southland were closed on New Years Day after a massive amount of untreated sewage was released into the Dominguez Channel, public health officials announced.

The spill ranged from 2 million to 4 million gallons to as high as 6 million gallons, the Los Angeles Public Health Department said in a statement on Friday.

All Los Angeles County beaches up to and including Rancho Palos Verdes Beach were closed. Seal Beach was also closed, officials said.
