Concerts Near Pasadena And LA County This Week

Here's a round-up of live music in LA County this week. Plus, a Q&A with Seattle funk and soul septet The Dip.

PASADENA, CA – There are a ton of great shows to catch this week in Los Angeles County, and we've gathered a list of live music from twenty of the county's top music venues for this week's round-up. From blues, to throwbacks, to indie rock, and electronic, there's something for everyone to see.

This week, Patch caught up with Jarred Katz, drummer of The Dip, a funk and soul septet from Seattle. KEXP called them "one of the most exciting and joyous acts to emerge in recent years." They just released a single called "Slow Sipper," a preview for an upcoming album they're working on.

The Dip is playing at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1 at the Teragram Ballroom. Buy tickets here.

Emily Holland: How would you describe your music to someone that’s never heard it?

Jarred Katz: At it’s core, it’s dancing music. The name of the band comes from a movement of your hips. It's a feeling! We try to write songs that have relatable storylines, so that we aren’t trying to be anyone other than ourselves. We hope the listener picks up on that authenticity and can relate to it!

EH: Who are your biggest musical inspirations/influences? Any artists that have helped shape your band’s style/sound?

JK: Clyde Stubbefield's ghost notes. Willie Mitchell’s Royal Studios and the Hi Records label. Aretha singing only about the feelings or stories she herself could relate to. Taj Mahal and his ability to bring so many different and worldwide musical genres together. Daptone Records for providing SOUL music to a new generation of music lovers. John Coltrane and his never ending quest to burst through boundaries and boxes that others tried to define him with. These are musicians that continually inspire us to push forward!

EH: I’ve always wondered how bands with more than four or five artists are able to mesh all of their ideas/contributions into a cohesive album. Can you speak about your experiences in a seven-member band?

JK: It can definitely be tough at times, but I think for us it works really well, because everyone kind of has a role carved out. Some members will bring in the initial skeleton or demo of a song, while some of the others focus on bringing that initial idea to life, by means of arrangement and more refined parts. It becomes a “Dip song” once it has gone through all parties and if we still like it after a few weeks. It’s important for us to record every step of a new song and then take a little bit of time to let that composition breath a bit. By reflecting on the composition, we can make more informed decisions with some fresh ears. A ton of ideas are thrown out at each session, so its imperative that we document everything so we don’t forget next time we all meet up.

EH: I hear a lot of blues influences in your music. How do make one of the oldest, history-rich genres of music sound new and fresh?

JK: The blues tradition is a very serious art form that we love trying to learn more about. Whether it's diving into the rhythmic intricacies of the vocals, or figuring out what part of a shuffle to accentuate for the best possible feeling, we’ve always felt that studying these details will help further our own compositions in a natural way. Inherently, our music is going to sound different than the blues records made back in the day, because it's virtually impossible to recreate many of those recorded sounds and feelings that came from those amazing sessions. We wouldn’t be able to pull that off in the first place! I think it ultimately comes down to wanting to learn more about the art form and taking that passion seriously so it begins to infiltrate the way we play our instruments and write songs.

EH: What are you you all listening to right now?

JK: Currently we have the following artists in heavy rotation: Joey Dosik, Les Paul, Quiet Elegance, Sam Evian, Courtney Marie Andrews, Oddisee, Marlena Shaw, and The Olympians.

Listen to "Slow Sipper" below, and catch The Dip this Thursday, Nov. 1 at the Teragram Ballroom.
