LOS ANGELES, CA — A short-lived but sweltering heat wave will hit the Southland this week, bringing triple digit temperatures to parts of Los Angeles for just one day. According to the National Weather Service, the warmest day of the week will be Wednesday followed by a sharp cooldown Thursday.

Temperatures in the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys are expected to reach the upper 80s and low 90s Tuesday before spiking to between 93-103 Wednesday. Even the coast will get hot thanks to a ridge of high pressure, reaching 85-93 degrees Wednesday. The mountains on Wednesday are expected to reach 80-100 in the mountains and foothills.

By Thursday temperatures will drop significantly. In places like Encino, the weather service forecasts a drop from a high of 101 Wednesday to 90 on Thursday.

In the meantime, forecasters urged area residents to limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of fluids while avoiding coffee and alcohol, dress in light, loose-fitting clothing, and never leave children, seniors or pets in hot parked cars.
