Over 150,000 Calls to Poison Centers about ADHD Drug Problems

Good Morning America aired an alarming story this afternoon about a very high incidence of ADHD drug mishaps among children - over 150,000 calls to Poison Control centers that involved misdosing or overdosing. Here is a link to their video:

Many children and teens have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, but the diagnosis may be incorrect.

Jill Stowell, Founder and Executive director of local Stowell Learning Centers, bestselling author of At Wit's End: A Parent's Guide to Ending the Struggle, Tears and Turmoil of Learning Disabilities, says 90% of their students who have learning challenges have attention symptoms that are related to weak, undeveloped underlying skills like memory, auditory and visual processing, processing speed logic and reasoning, comprehension and more. Once those underlying skills are developed, the attention symptoms often disappear.

She says that of course this is not the case with every child diagnosed and that biochemical management through medication, diet, or supplements may be the answer for some children, but in 34 years of helping families and students with these challenges, the vast number of them resolve when the underlying weak skills are addressed.

The challenge is most parents don’t know there are successful, different ways to address these issues.
