Poll: 80 Percent of Pasadenans Support Minimum Wage Increase

An big majority of residents want the City Council to increase the city's minimum wage to $15 an hour by July 1, 2020, a new poll has found.

PASADENA, CA -- Pasadena voters overwhelmingly want the City Council to increase the city’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by July 1, 2020, a telephone poll conducted between Jan. 30 and Feb. 5 has found, according to a local organization advocating for the increase.

The poll, which was conducted by David Binder Research, was on the behalf of Pasadenans Organizing for Progress, or POP. The results were revealed Feb. 6, days before the Pasadena City Council is expected to take up the issue during its Feb. 11 meeting.

The scientific poll found that 81 percent of Pasadena’s voters support an increase in the city’s minimum wage. The poll also found that there is overwhelming support among voters in all seven City Council districts, ranging from 75 percent to 89 percent.

David Binder Research conducted the telephone poll of 700 likely voters who voted in November 2016 or November 2018 or have registered since November 2018 with no previous election history. Sixty-nine percent of telephone interviews were conducted via cell phone and 31 percent via landline.

Voters were asked to indicate their support or opposition for the city council to vote YES in February 2019 to continue the gradual increase of the minimum wage to $15 per hour.

Support for the City Council raising the minimum wage to $15/hour by 2020 was supported by both men and women, by voters in all age groups, and among all race and ethnic groups. By gender, both women (85 percent) and men (77 percent) expressed support. By age groups, there was support among voters aged 18-38 years (87 percent support), 39-54 years (78 percent), 55-73 years (81 percent), and age 74 and above (76 percent). By race and ethnic group, there was support among white voters (79 percent), Latino voters (90 percent), Asian American voters (81 percent), and Black voters (90 percent).

In terms of political affiliations, 92 percent of Democrats, 56 percent of Republicans, and 80 percent of voters with no party preference support raising the city’s minimum wage to $15/hour by 2020. For voters who are affiliated with a labor union, or have a labor union member in their household, 89 percent expressed support.
