PETALUMA, CA — A vegetation fire broke out in difficult-to-access terrain Wednesday in Petaluma but that did not deter firefighters.

The Petaluma Fire Department was dispatched at 1:17 p.m. to a report of smoke in the area of Sapphire Street in the Quarry Heights neighborhood.

Petaluma Fire Battalion Chief Matt Martin said all three Petaluma engines, the Battalion Chief, two medic units, and an engine from Gold Ridge Fire Protection District arrived within five minutes and found smoke and flames on a hillside.

"Access to the hillside proved difficult due to terrain and a large retaining wall, but crews were able to access the area with a ladder and stop the spread of the fire with a short hose lay within 10 minutes," Martin said.

Members of the Petaluma Police Department, Rancho Adobe Fire and Cal Fire also responded to the scene.

The Petaluma Fire Department thanked the person who reported the fire who was working at a construction site in the area and promptly called 911 as soon as smoke was seen.

"We are happy to report that no one was injured during this incident and would like to remind our residents to call 911 immediately if any smoke, flames, or suspicious activity are seen," Martin said.

Petaluma Fire Department acknowledged and thanked its surrounding partners for their assistance during the incident and for providing station coverage for the emergencies that occurred during the incident.

The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Petaluma Fire Prevention Bureau.
