Assistance League Launches Legacy of Literacy

Place your donations in containers bearing this logo at any of the three locations.

One of 120 chapters, Assistance League ®of Diablo Valley, 450 member volunteers strong, will participate in Assistance League’s Legacy of Literacy to be held nationwide from February 10 through 25, 2018. Implemented through Operation School Bell®, a nationally acclaimed, hands-on philanthropic program that has served the local community since 1994 by providing clothing and a shoe card to school students, Legacy of Literacy involves collecting donated new and gently used children’s books and distributing them to identified youngsters living in Contra Costa

Legacy of Literacy seeks to offset overwhelming statistics that adversely affect our community’s most treasured asset, its children. Did you know that in low income neighborhoods, there is only one book for every 300 children? Two thirds of fourth grade students who read below grade level will face the threats of financial instability and/or incarceration in future years. Studies show that the single most influencing factor to a child’s success in school is through an early introduction to books and reading.

Please join us in reversing this national dilemma. For your convenience, Assistance League of Diablo Valley member volunteers have arranged for nearby book donation drop off containers at Walnut Creek Ford, 1800 North Main Street, in Walnut Creek, at Orinda Books, 276 Village Sq., Orinda and at the Assistance League Way Side Inn Thrift Shop, 3521 Golden Gate Way, in Lafayette.
