DVC star Campbell wins state 100, 200 track titles

Diablo Valley College had a strong showing at the CCCAA State Track and Field Championships: three state titles.

SACRAMENTO -- Sensational Diablo Valley College sophomore Strangenae Campbell repeated as women’s state 100-meter champion at the CCCAA Track and Field Championships Saturday at American River College. She breezed to victory in a time of 11.50 seconds.
But Campbell wasn’t finished. She also blazed to victory in the 200 in a time of 23.65, beating two Sequoias runners to the finish line.
Overall, it was a clutch and first-class effort by the Vikings.
Antwuin Prowes won the men’s state 800 meter title, besting an East Bay-powered field that also included DVC’s Geoffrey Weseman, who placed fifth. Prowes was timed in 1:52.53, and Weseman came in at 1:54.12.
Campbell, now a three-time state individual champion, was named Athlete of the Meet for the track events.
DVC coach Kyle Whitmore was thrilled with the team effort.
"I am glad that those athletes were able to perform that way on the biggest stage. That is not always the case," Whitmore said. "We had other close calls, so unfortunately I am thinking about the other opportunities to win state titles that were missed. It was a championship effort across the board for our team and I feel satisfied but hungry for more!"
Indeed, the DVC men placed fourth as a team with 45 points, and the DVC women were 10th with 28 points.
The DVC men were an excellent third in the 4x100 relay in 40.76, and finished the meet with a rousing runner-up finish in the 4x400 relay in 3:12.84.
DVC sophomore Corey Gilbert flexed some muscle in the weight events, placing second in the shot put and seventh in the discus.
In Friday’s first day of the meet, DVC’s Jack Pickard was fourth in the javelin and Christine Bayliss was fourth in the 10K.
