DVC swimmer Logan Killion sizzles in Big 8 Invite

Diablo Valley College standout Logan Killion gave a command performance at the Big 8 Swim Invitational in Stockton on Friday with first-place finishes in the men’s 200-yard and 500 freestyle races.
Killion prevailed by more than two seconds in the 200 free in a time of 1 minute, 45.02 seconds, and won the 500 free by nearly 16 seconds in 4:47.83.
The DVC women also finished first in the 200 free relay (1:43.12), and the DVC men (1:28.10) finished a close second behind Sierra (1:28) in the 200 free relay.
The DVC men’s and women’s teams were both second in the 200 medley relay. The DVC women’s relay members were Allison Tong (back), Jamie Wanket (breast), Bridget Struck (fly), and Alina Weigelt (free). The men’s relay members were Killion (back), Bang Kai Chao (breast), Ryan Mates (fly), and Jeremy Peris (free).
Wanket had a solid meet, taking second in the women’s 50 free (25.77) and 100 free (55.40).
Peris dropped a close race in the men’s 100 free (48.07). Jeremiah Olmstead of Sierra took first in 47.95. Mirelle Augst was third in the women’s 200 backstroke (2:18.07).
Kristen Black was second in the women ‘s 500 free (5:33.04) and a close second in the 100 fly (1:03.61), behind Mia Lieston of American River (1:03.43). Weigelt and Augst were third and fourth in the 200 free.
Kyle Oslund was second in the men’s 200 breast (2:13.52) and Hsiao Hsien Lee was fourth (2:18.99).

SOFTBALL
DVC finished last week with a hard-hitting 10-6 road win over Cosumnes River on Friday to earn a doubleheader split.
Four Vikings had two hits and two RBIs apiece -- second baseman Madeline Cervantes, first baseman Olivia Soley, winning pitcher Sita Manoa, and left fielder Kaitlyn Van Motman. The Vikings, who amassed 14 hits, scored in bunches with seven in the fourth and three in the sixth.
With San Joaquin Delta (19-3, 10-1) and Sierra (21-3, 8-1) leading the Big 8, the Vikings (11-7, 5-6 Big 8) are in a close battle for the third and fourth spots.
Soley, a freshman out of St. Patrick/St. Vincent High, has been a versatile standout with a 5-4 pitching record and .474 batting average and .561 slugging percentage. She is No. 2 on the team behind freshman catcher Terri Taylor in hits with 27. Taylor, with 28 hits, has a team-best .500 batting average and .714 slugging percentage.
On defense, Soley has 19 assists and no errors and freshman second baseman Madeline Cervantes has 29 assists and no errors.
DVC next has pair of nonconference games at home, against West Valley (6-17) on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and Foothill (20-5) on Thursday at 1 p.m. The Vikings will close the week with a home doubleheader against American River (13-7, 4-5) on Saturday (noon, 2 p.m.).

MEN’S TENNIS
The Vikings (4-4, 3-3) evened their conference and overall records with a 9-0 win over Shasta in conference play on Friday.

BASEBALL
The Vikings showed moxie and offensive muscle by taking two of three from American River in Big 8 play.
An eight-run rally produced a 16-8 win over ARC on March 14. After ARC took the second game of the series 10-5, the Vikings won 9-3 on Saturday.
DVC (8-16, 3-6) will host Hartnell in a nonconference game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
In the 16-8 win, leadoff/third baseman Frank Panacci was 4 for 6 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI. Catcher Drew Downing and DH Jared Bannister both had four hits and three RBI. Second baseman Andres Rodriguez was 2 for 2 with two RBI. Reliever Ryan Douglas (2-3) worked 2.2 spotless innings to get the win.
Liam Knowles, Rodriguez and Bannister all had two RBI in the climactic 10th inning.
In the 9-3 win, Rodriguez was 5 for 5 with two RBI and two runs scored to highlight the effort. Jordan Williams and Downing both had two RBI. Rob Towne (3-2) got the pitching win, allowing eight hits, no earned runs, striking out five and walking none. Reliever Riley Moore nailed down the victory, allowing one hit over 2.0 innings.
