Senator Bill Dodd: Coastal Cleanup Day

California Coastal Cleanup Day is Saturday, September 15, 2018. Join the senator and thousands of Californians to protect our coast.

The 34th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day is Saturday, September 15, 2018. Join the senator and thousands of Californians at more than 700 cleanup sites statewide to protect our coast and waterways.

Since the program started in 1985, close to 1 million volunteers have removed about 20 million pounds of debris from our state's shorelines, beaches and tributaries.

"Our coast is a precious resource, and I hope you can join me to help clean our coastline and tributaries," Senator Bill Dodd said.

There are events around our region, including on the bay, in the Delta, at local rivers and other waterways. Today, one of the main causes of ocean debris are plastic shopping bags that end up in our waterways and drift into the ocean, so cleaning up local rivers and streams is an important part of this effort.

If you can't attend a cleanup, you can help by doing the following:

  • Participate in Coastal Commission programs (call 1-(800) COAST-4U or visit their website.
  • Reduce, reuse and recycle at home, work and school;
  • Buy products made from recycled materials with little or no packaging;
  • Keep storm drains clean (because they drain to beaches and other waterways);
  • Keep cigarette butts off streets and beaches;
  • Properly dispose of fishing lines, nets and hooks; and
  • Buy a "whale tail" license plate to support our coast.
