Humboldt State recently became the third Polytechnic campus in California and was renamed Cal Poly Humboldt. Along with the name change comes a new investment in STEM majors at the campus.

In the Fall of 2023, Cal Poly Humboldt will be adding Energy Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, Software Engineering, Geospatial Information Science & Technology, Applied Fire Science & Management, Cannabis Studies & Marine Biology majors.

Mechanical & Software Engineering are among the most popular majors at all California colleges, and for many programs, students must have a 4.0 GPA or above to be accepted. Having another option in California with a lower GPA requirement creates a huge opportunity for California students.

Data Science is another degree that is mostly offered at the UC schools, and in my opinion, is a major that will be in greater demand in the coming years.

There are also very few colleges that offer a Bachelor in Fire Science degree, so having a new option in California near our Redwood forests will provide a great training environment.
