HAWTHORNE, CA — A special delivery has arrived in Southern California with Maui Humane Society's Wings of Aloha.

The animal transfer program started in 2017 and brings dogs available in Maui for adoption to Southern California. And on Saturday, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles will host a dog adoption event.

"While every effort is made to find homes in Hawaii, there are simply not enough available adopters on the island to rehome all the pets," according to the spcLA. "spcaLA is uniquely qualified to understand this issue having created Air Chihuahua in 2014. Air Chihuahua transports small breed dogs to other areas in the country where they are in demand."

The animal shelters are working together to help place the animals in homes.

“Maui put out the call for help, and we are in a position to answer,” Madeline Bernstein, spcaLA President, said in a statement. “We have transported hundreds of animals over the years, so we are happy to return the favor.”

To ensure the integrity of spcaLA’s current dog population, the Maui dogs have received preliminary health checks from spcaLA medical staff, as well as age-appropriate vaccinations. spcaLA operates two adoption centers in Los Angeles County. Most animals available for adoption are lost and unclaimed animals coming primarily from nine municipal shelters, and, space permitting, other shelters out of their contracted network.

The Maui dogs range in age from 2-months to 4-years-old and are available for adoption at 11 a.m. Saturday at the spcaLA PD Pitchford Companion Animal Village & Education Center, 7700 East Spring Street, Long Beach.

Adoptions will be done on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Potential adopters can save time by filling out an application online at spcaLA.com/adopt. All adopters must meet spcaLA adoption requirements and pay an adoption fee.
