ECC Art Gallery Hosts Online Exhibition Of COVID-Themed Works
"Pandemic Response" features more than 40 Southern California artists.

In this time of closures and social distancing brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, access to cultural resources has been extremely limited. The El Camino College Art Gallery, however, has adapted to this unusual situation by moving its offerings online. Fittingly, the theme of the current exhibition is the COVID-19 pandemic itself.

“Pandemic Response” is an exhibition of work by 41 Southern California artists and a musician in response to the onslaught of COVID-19. Three of the artists—Joyce Dallal, Tom Kidd, and Michael Lewis Miller—are also members of the Art Department faculty at El Camino. Hosted entirely online now through September 30 on the Art Gallery’s webpage, the exhibition features works in a variety of media that explore pandemic-related themes such as fear, isolation, anger, anxiety, the passage of time, and hope and resilience.
“In April, I began contacting a number of artists, inquiring as to whether they were doing artwork in response to this stressful situation in which human contact is limited, diversion is at low tide and introversion and introspection are given carte blanche,” said Susanna Meiers, Curator of the El Camino College Art Gallery. “To my amazement, a plethora of artists eagerly responded. The work that has emerged during this time period is varied and fascinating.”

Some of the works include a stitched political commentary, a community-based book project, a performance video, printmaking, photography, and meditative paintings and drawings. Images of these works and the accompanying artist statements are posted on the Art Gallery webpage.
The “Pandemic Response” exhibition will be followed by a separate online show in October addressing the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and themes related to the Black Lives Matter movement. Artists interested in being considered for this exhibition can send images, image identification, and a statement to [email protected].
