REDONDO BEACH, CA — Redondo Beach's iconic July 4 fireworks show over the ocean has returned for 2024 after new County rules forced the show to take a year off.

The classic show over King's Harbor will take place at 9 p.m. on Independence Day, officials said.

Last year, Los Angeles County adopted rules that require officials to submit specific safety permits for fireworks launched on or near the ocean. This change prompted Redondo Beach's fireworks display vendor to pull out from doing the show due to concerns about the potential for legal action, city officials said.

In place of the fireworks, Redondo Beach pivoted and held a drone show as well as an Independence Day Celebration at the Seaside Lagoon that will include family-friendly activities and music.

In February of this year, the Redondo Beach City Council voted to bring the traditional fireworks show back with a new vendor, Garden State Fireworks.

The new contract is for $119,171, which is a significant rise in price due to the city's decision to work with PI Environmental Consultants to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
