RBPD Awards Scholarships To 3 Redondo Union Students

Three graduating students from Redondo Union received scholarships from RBPD to honor their commitment to leadership and good character.

REDONDO BEACH, CA — Three graduating students from Redondo Union High School received scholarships from the Redondo Beach Police Department to honor their commitment to leadership and good character.

The Visionary Scholarship highlights students who embody RBPD's commitment to building community trust and providing excellent law enforcement services. RBPD honored student MaKanzie Smalling, who will be attending the University of California San Diego in the fall, with the scholarship .

"Miss Smalling was selected for this scholarship based on her efforts to promote the Vision Statement of the Police Department, 'We Are the Community – Leading the Way in Law Enforcement,'" RBPD said in a statement.

Two more scholarships in the amount of $500 each were given to students Tatum Esparza, who will attend the University of Georgia, and Harrison Collier, who will attend the University of Colorado Boulder.

"Both students were selected based on their civic activities and their sustained demonstration of Martin Luther King Jr. like leadership," RBPD said.

Since 2020, RBPD and the Redondo Beach Police Foundation have provided $13,000 in scholarships to students from Redondo Union High School. Scholarship recipients are selected by RBPD's Community Engagement Board, an inclusive and diverse body that represents the many voices in the community.

The board's purpose is to improve trust and transparency between RBPD and those who work, live and visit Redondo Beach.

"The Redondo Beach Police Department and Redondo Beach Police Foundation congratulate the recipients of these scholarships and wish them and the entire graduating class of 2023 great success," RBPD said.
