REDONDO BEACH, CA — After 16 years as Superintendent of Schools for Redondo Beach Unified School District, Steven Keller announced he would be retiring in December to his staff in a letter.

Keller became superintendent in 2006 and lead the 9,600 student district through many challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. He told the Daily Breeze that the pandemic took its toll on teachers and administrators.

Keller said he liked the idea of leaving in the middle of the school year because it would be easier for the district to transition, as classes will be far along at that point.

“It will be softer on my emotions, too,” Keller told the Daily Breeze. “I’ve invested a lot of heart and soul and work into this place. I want a soft landing and likewise, I want someone to ease into the role.”

The next Redondo Beach Unified school board meeting is on Sept. 13, and Board of Education President David Watkin said they will likely discuss the transition. The board's goal is to have a new superintendent in place on Jan. 1.
