Redondo Beach Children's Author Aims To Teach Environmentalism

"Seasons" is meant to excite and educate children on big environmental topics such as pollution, droughts, and greenhouse gases.

REDONDO BEACH, CA – Redondo Beach children's author C.S. Ulyate has created a children's book series called Seasons, aiming to introduce environmental concepts such as pollution, droughts, and greenhouse gases to kids at a younger age. Ulyate wants to excite and educate children on a topic that, a lot of the times, make people turn their heads away, the press release said.

Seasons is an action-adventure middle school book series that starts with Seasons: The Ring of Fire and its sequel Seasons: Waves of Madness. The seven-book series follows the journey of Mother Nature’s four orphan children Winter, Fall, Summer, and Spring as they travel across the world to find her, but on their journey they come across Mother Nature’s evil children that represent different forms of pollution. It’s Percy Jackson meets Captain Planet, the press release said.

“I feel kids, parents, and educators are tired of seeing the depressing news about the environment but still want to learn about the issues. We need to bring back the fun! I believe positive entertainment and strong storytelling is a significant way to bringing up these current issues as it was entertainment, such as Captain Planet that introduced me and many others about these environmental problems and even leads to pursuing careers to work on the solutions," Ulyate said.

Although Ulyate's books have an environmental twist to it, the story always comes first, he said. Seasons is filled with laughter, plots that would put your eyes on edge, and a large cast of quirky characters with strange pasts and abilities, he said.

Seasons is also working alongside local and international organizations such as Algalita Marine Research and Education, Treepeople, and Project Aware in making sure that their peer-reviewed research is making its way into the story. Some of the work in Seasons: Waves of Madness has been used to create the Mercury Education Activity Guide that is now being incorporated into the California 4th Grade Gold Rush Curriculum. In addition, Seasons has been endorsed by Charles J. Moore who is known for discovering the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and is the founder of Algalita Marine Research, the press release said.

“As children mature, the freedom of fiction is often replaced by the learning of 'facts.' C.S. Ulyate is a pioneer in bridging the gap between these two worlds, offering the next generation a chance to learn about current environmental issues without limiting the imagination,” Moore said.
