In many states, having five numbers, but missing the Powerball number can be worth either $1 million or $2 million. However, California law requires major lottery payoffs to be made on a pari-mutuel basis.

The Powerball game is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The jackpot for Saturday's Powerball lottery was $20 million. Without a big winner, the jackpot rolled over to $26 million for Monday's drawing, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association, which conducts the game.

There were no tickets sold with all six numbers for Monday's Powerball lottery, which means Wednesday's drawing is expected to grow to $35 million, the Multi-State Lottery Association said.

A ticket with five correct numbers, but missing the Powerball number, was sold in New Mexico ahead of Monday night's drawing, City News Service reported.
