Redondo Beach Natives Win Manhattan Beach 10K

Simon Schmidt finished Saturday's race in 31 minutes, 35 seconds. Nathalie Higley placed first in the women's division.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA -- Two Redondo Beach natives won the won the 39th annual Manhattan Beach 10K Run this past weekend.

Simon Schmidt, a former USC distance runner and Redondo Union High grad, finished first in the men's division in 31 minutes, 35 seconds, ahead of last year's winner. This was the first time Schmidt ran the race.

In the women's division, Nathalie Higley of Redondo Beach placed first with a time of 37:55.

The Manhattan Beach 10K Run was founded in 1978 by a group of volunteers and local runners that wanted to have a race "in town." Proceeds from the race go back to the community, according to the organizers.

More than $560,000 have been raised for scholarships to Manhattan Beach high school seniors and various upgrades to recreation facilities at local schools and parks.
